Parts, chapters & scenes

Parts

Parts are the top-level containers — acts, books, sections, or whatever fits your structure. Chapters must always belong to a part.

Create a part

• Click the Add Part button in the outline footer
• Use Write → New Part from the menu bar
• Hover over any part row and click the + that appears

A new part is created with the name “New Part” and one blank chapter inside it.

Rename a part

• Click the part title in the outline to edit it inline
• Or right-click → Rename Part

Reorder parts

Drag part rows up and down in the outline.

Delete a part

Hover the row and click the trash icon, or right-click → Delete Part. If the part contains chapters, a confirmation dialog asks before deleting everything.

Chapters

Chapters live inside parts. Each chapter has its own scenes, notes, and drafts.

Create a chapter

• Hover over a part row in the outline and click +
• Right-click a part → Add Chapter
• Use Write → New Chapter from the menu bar

New chapters are named “Chapter N” (auto-incrementing).

Rename a chapter

• Click the chapter title in the top toolbar of the editor to rename it inline
• Or right-click in the outline → Rename Chapter

Reorder chapters

Drag chapter rows within their part in the outline.

Move a chapter to a different part

Drag the chapter row onto another part in the outline.

Delete a chapter

Hover the row and click trash, or right-click → Delete Chapter. A confirmation is shown if the chapter contains content.

Scenes

Scenes are the individual pieces of prose inside a chapter. Every chapter has at least one scene.

Create a scene

• ⌘↩ — inserts a blank scene after the current one
• ⌘↩ with text selected — splits the selection into new scenes
• + in the Scenes panel header
• Write → New Scene

Rename a scene

Open the Scenes panel (⌘4), find the scene card, and click the scene title field to edit it. Scene titles are optional — unnamed scenes show as Scene N.

Reorder scenes

• Drag scene cards in the Scenes sidebar (⌘4)
• Or drag the drop zones between scenes directly in the editor

Move a scene to another chapter

Open the Part overview (click the Part in the outline), switch to the Scenes tab, and drag scene cards between chapter groups.

Delete a scene

• Right-click a scene in the editor → Delete Scene
• Click the trash icon on a scene card in the Scenes panel

If the scene contains text, it is moved to the chapter’s Trash draft automatically (nothing is lost). A chapter always keeps at least one scene.

Limits

There are no hard limits on the number of parts, chapters, scenes, notes, or drafts. The app is designed to hold a full novel regardless of length.
