Importing a manuscript
Opening the Import panel
Choose File → Import… (⌘⇧I). The Import panel walks you through four steps:
- Source — choose the format and select your file or URL
- Style mapping (rich text only) — assign heading sizes to Parts, Chapters, or Scene Breaks
- Preview — a tree of Parts → Chapters with checkboxes to include or exclude
- Destination — append to the current project, or create a new one
Word (.docx / .doc)
Select a Word file in the Import panel.
The style-mapping step shows the heading sizes found in the document. Assign each size a structural role:
| Role | What it becomes |
|---|---|
| Part | A new Part |
| Chapter | A new Chapter |
| Scene Break | A * * * scene separator |
| Body / Ignore | Regular story prose |
Paragraphs below mapped headings become scene text. If no headings are present, the entire document becomes one chapter with one scene.
Pages (.pages)
Select a Pages file. The import process is the same as Word, using the same style-mapping step.
Note: If a Pages file cannot be read directly, export it as Word (.docx) from Pages first, then import the .docx file into Cora.
Google Docs
Switch to the Google Docs tab in the Import panel and paste the share URL.
Requirements:
- The document must be shared as “Anyone with the link can view” — copy the link from Share → Copy link in Google Docs
- An internet connection is required for this import method
The document is downloaded as plain text. If the document has headings, the style-mapping step appears.
Plain text (.txt) and folders
Select a single .txt file or an entire folder.
Single file
The file becomes one Chapter with one or more Scenes. Cora splits scenes automatically:
- On
\n---\nseparators (explicit scene breaks) - On paragraph groups if the file is long (approx. 400 words per scene)
- Otherwise the whole file becomes one scene
Folder of .txt files
- Sub-folders present → each sub-folder becomes a Part;
.txtfiles inside become Chapters - Flat folder (no sub-folders) → one Part named after the folder; each file becomes a Chapter
- Multiple loose files selected → one Part named “Imported”; each file becomes a Chapter
Destination
At the final step, choose where the imported content goes:
- Append to current project — adds the imported Parts and Chapters at the end of the open novel
- New project — creates a new
.corafile with just the imported content
What is not imported
- Formatting (bold, italic, underline) — the editor is plain text
- Images, tables, footnotes
- Comments and tracked changes
- Styles other than heading levels
